Studying in Canada: Internationa Scholarships at the University of Manitoba (2025)

As the demand for quality education continues to grow, the University of Manitoba
stands out as one of Canada’s leading institutions offering a wide range of
scholarships for international students. For Nigerian students and others seeking
higher education abroad, 2025 presents a golden opportunity to benefit from several
generous scholarship programs that support both undergraduate and graduate
studies at the university.
For international undergraduates, the University of Manitoba offers an International
Undergraduate Student Entrance Scholarship. This award is automatically
considered once a student applies for admission, and it is designed to reward
academic excellence. Based on final high school averages, students can receive
between CAD $1,000 and $3,000, with awards being highest for those scoring 95% or
more. To be eligible, students must apply for admission by March 1, 2025. Full details
about this opportunity are available on the university’s entrance awards page.
Once enrolled, international students who perform well can also qualify for the
International Undergraduate Student Scholarship. To be considered, students must
complete at least 24 credit hours at the university, maintain a minimum sessional
GPA of 3.5, and be registered for full-time studies in the next academic year. The
scholarship amounts vary depending on the student’s academic performance. These
awards are part of the university’s broader efforts to recognize consistent academic
achievement across a student’s program of study. You can read more about these
opportunities on the international student awards page.
Beyond merit-based scholarships, the University of Manitoba also provides financial
assistance through the International Student Bursary. While this is not open to first-
year students, continuing undergraduates with demonstrated financial need are
encouraged to apply via the Aurora Student Portal. Applications for the 2025–2026
academic year close on October 1, 2025.
Graduate students are not left out either. The University of Manitoba Graduate
Fellowships (UMGF) are among the most notable awards for postgraduate students.
These fellowships provide funding of CAD $20,000 per year for master’s students and
CAD $25,000 per year for PhD candidates. To apply, students must be nominated by

their department, so it’s advisable to consult with faculty as early as possible to meet
internal deadlines. Details can be found on the university’s graduate studies funding
page.
In addition to the UMGF, the university offers fully funded graduate scholarships that
include tuition, living expenses, and additional support for research. These
scholarships are available across a range of disciplines and have flexible start
dates—including Fall 2025, Winter 2026, and Summer 2026. The minimum stipend
for these awards is CAD $21,000 for master’s students and CAD $26,000 for PhD
students. More information is available through trusted scholarship hubs such as
ScholarsWorld.ng.
With deadlines quickly approaching—March 1 for admission-based scholarships, July
15 for entrance bursaries, and October 1 for general bursaries—it’s important for
prospective students to plan ahead and prepare all necessary documents.
Studying at the University of Manitoba not only offers access to world-class
academic resources and a vibrant campus community, but also provides real
financial support that can make the dream of studying abroad a reality for many
international students. Whether you’re a high school graduate or a seasoned
academic aiming for a PhD, these scholarships are crafted to reward excellence,
encourage perseverance, and promote global academic exchange.
